ChatGPT & Research

ChatGPT can help with planning your library research

ChatGPT can help with planning your library research.

Get ideas for topics, keywords, and which library databases to search.

ChatGPT can be a useful tool when it comes to deciding what your specific topic should be for a research paper.

You can use it to:

  1. Narrow down your topic ideas.

  2. Come up with keywords for searching in library databases.

  3. Construct a search strategy for those databases.

  4. Recommend possible library databases to use for your topic.

If you'd like to try it, use this handout: Generate topics for your research paper with ChatGPT.

How to acknowledge use of ChatGPT

How to acknowledge use of ChatGPT

Be transparent about how you use it.

If you are allowed to use ChatGPT in an academic assignment, here are guidelines for acknowledge use. Be sure to ask your instructor what method they prefer.

But you're not quoting a person, so isn't this different than citing?
That's right! So some instructors may ask for an appendix that includes the prompts that you provided to ChatGPT or the full transcript of your interaction.

Beyond ChatGPT

Additional Large Language Models

ChatGPT is not the only language model. It’s worth trying these other models as they have different strengths & weaknesses than ChatGPT.

All of these models have both free and paid versions.

Other apps built on the same technology

Other apps built on the same technology

There are many apps built on language models.

Since many models (like ChatGPT) have an API, developers all over the world are building apps based on them.

In fact there are so many that it’s difficult to keep track of them all!

There are apps for

  • writing

  • presenting slides

  • analyzing data

  • reading and studying

  • creating images and videos

  • working with music and speech

  • and more.

Use a search engine like Future Tools to find them.

If you are a coder, you can use the OpenAI Developer Platform to create your own apps.
